Hibiscus Villa sleeps up to nine and has an amazing T-Shaped pool

Hotel Location: Hibiscus Villa is the sister property of Hibiscus Beach Retreat which I’ve reviewed here. Hibiscus Villa is situated in Kudat, the most northerly village in Borneo and just a 10 minute drive to the Tip of Borneo.

Room: Hibiscus Villa is a luxury three bed villa which sleeps up to nine. It is a 6,000 square foot house sitting within a large garden full of coconut trees and lush vegetation. You can see and hear the South China Sea from the villa; the private beach is just a 10 minute stroll away.

Hibiscus Villa is a regular winner in Malaysia-wide awards in the luxe-related categories and for good reason. It’s beautifully decorated, situated and offers total escape from busy lives.

We stayed in this room; both the extra beds underneath were made up for the kids

Service: Jettol, the maintenance manager, was a pleasure to deal with. He showed us around, explained how breakfast would work (you fill out a form the evening before to order your breakfast for the next day, specifying whether you would like a pastry/eggs and how you prefer them cooked/tea or coffee. Jettol checked in with us a couple of times during the day to make sure we had everything we needed. He was attentive, friendly (he speaks excellent English) and readily gives the impression that nothing is too much trouble. The housekeeping staff were equally helpful and kind. Win dropped us off and picked us up from the Tip of Borneo on one of our days for a very small charge.  Win is from the local Rungus tribe, famed for their handicrafts, and makes bags and other items which are available to buy from the villa. I couldn’t resist picking up a couple for myself and also as presents – they are gorgeous!

A couple of my purchases which were made by Win who works for Hibiscus Villa

Food: Breakfast which I’ve mentioned above was tasty and the housekeeping staff set the table for us and cleared up afterwards. Through Jettol we arranged a chef for the evening who cooked us a BBQ. It was absolutely delicious and for less than £40, we had a huge fish (fresh from Kudat market that day), vegetables, rice and noodles as well as the local delicacy, fried bananas, for pudding. It was absolutely delicious and a real treat.

Facilities: The villa is beautiful and comes with all mod cons, including wifi (unlike the Beach Retreat). There is daily housekeeping and a laundry service if you want or need it. There is no gym however there is no shortage of exercise options with the beautiful pool, kayaks, snorkels, stand up paddle boards and mountain bikes (all for hire at a small additional cost).

The pool was AMAZING and the body of the ‘T’ was shallow enough for the kids to stand waist deep

Mummy on the Run Recommendation Rating: 9/10. Hibiscus Villa is an excellent choice for larger groups seeking some quiet relaxation amongst nature. There is plenty to see and do in the area if you so choose but Hibiscus Villa is a haven of calm and relaxation. We were so pleased to spend the last days of our adventure there.
